Use Of Conventions

How does your product use or challenge conventions of your genre?

Our film challenges conventions of typical drama films because we incorporate comedy. The relationship Francesca and Isabella have is funny because Isabella is not very smart but she is hardworking. Francesca is very smart but pretty lazy. Our camera-shots, such as an over-the-shoulder, and a low angle shot, are common in drama films and help add suspense to the film. For example, the long shot of Leonardo kidnapping Samantha, shows an innocent girl in a quiet neighborhood, and then a "bad guy" taking her away. In the opening scene, there is incidental music, which adds suspense to the film to keep the viewer engaged.

How does your project represent social groups or issues?

Our film represents the social groups of the mobsters, the cops, and the constant tension between them. While they may not be as prevalent as they were 50 and 60 years ago, mobsters still exist today. They are constantly at battle with the cops. I feel we represent this well because we have very stereotypical mobsters and cops in our film.

How does your product use or challenge conventions and how does it represent social groups or issues? Our product uses and challenges conventions by the use of camera shots. For example, we used a POV shot when Samantha was getting kidnapped, to show fear from the perspective of a kidnap victim. We also used a long shot, to show that kidnappings can happen anywhere, not just stereotypical places such as dark alleys and big cities. The social groups represented are the "good guys", the "bad guys", and the ordinary civilian. Leonardo represents the bad guys, as the leader of the Italian mob. They are shown as criminals, who hold their hostages for ransom. Samantha is shown as the ordinary civilian, who just happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time. The "good guys" are represented by Francheska and Isabella, who are the detectives trying to bring justice to the mob, specifically Leonardo, and bring back their friend Samantha. Casting

Leonardo - The Mobster - Jacob: We chose me to be Leonardo because typically, Italian mobsters are male. Also, my black hair and necklace fit the typical mobster look. Leonardo is a very secretive, cunning, and smart man. Isabella - Stupid Detective - Nicole: We chose Nicole to be Isabella because Nicole is very smart, but can be clueless sometimes.  Isabella is also a smart detective, but is clueless to her surroundings. Her stupidity adds a comedy aspect to the film. Francesca - Smart Detective - Grace: We chose Grace to be Francesca because Grace is always making fun of Nicole for her clueless personality. We thought there two combating personalities would add comedy and make the audience laugh. Samantha - Girl who is kidnapped - Emily: While Emily isn't in our group, she is friends with all of us. She also lives near Grace, so she was a perfect extra. Samantha is an athletic girl who finds herself in bad situations often.
